Snack brand Ruffles apologized last week for its “Tofu-urky” advertisement. The chip-maker posted an image of a non-existent “turkey-less” Ruffles flavor with the tagline “for a limited time, never” to its social media accounts on Thanksgiving, prompting backlash from its followers. Commenters asked the potato chip company why it would alienate its large vegan fan base by making light of the cruel turkey industry. Tracey Reiman, Executive Vice President of animal-rights organization People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), sent a letter to Frito-Lay (the parent company of Ruffles) after the incident asking it to remediate the situation. “Pull the idiotic ad—which is garnering backlash from customers—and replace it with a compassionate one that shows respect for all living, feeling beings,” Reiman stated in the letter, prompting a swift response from Frito-Lay. “In our recent ‘Limited Time Never’ social media post, our humor was off, and for that we apologize,” the company stated Wednesday on Facebook. “It was not our intent to offend, and we have removed the posts from our social media feeds.”
