Multi-national beauty company Lush, Ltd. recently relaunched its popular shampoo bar with a more prominent cruelty-free label. Lush re-labeled the bars with a #BeCrueltyFree design across the front written in both English and Chinese—the languages most commonly used on social media—to bolster a campaign to end animal testing, launched by animal-rights organization Humane Society International. “The horror of cosmetics testing will not be over for animals until the whole world switches to more modern, non-animal safety testing methods,” Lush ethics director Hilary Jones said. “Only when this ugly practice is over will our industry truly be the beauty business.” While Lush does not test on animals—instead relying on human volunteers and modern animal-free testing methods—some of its formulations continue to contain animal products such as honey, eggs, and dairy.
