Great British Bake-Off to Feature Vegan Meringue 

The Great British Bake Off airs its first-ever vegan episode today. Contestants will be challenged to make meringues, tarts, and a layered cake during the three-part challenge which consists of a savory pastry signature challenge, a technical challenge with unusual ingredients, and a showstopper challenge. “We wanted something different and something to represent what was happening in this country,” host Paul Hollywood said. “Veganism is something that seems to be growing. That’s why it is in.” Hollywood’s inclination is supported by data that shows that 56 percent of young Brits transitioned to veganism last year. “If you are a vegan or you’re thinking about it and are just worried about how it is going to change your life,” Hollywood continued, “watch it and see. It fascinated me, totally … shocked me as well.”
