Delivery service Postmates will no longer deliver foie gras—engorged liver of a duck or goose that was force-fed. Animal-rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) petitioned the service to end its deliveries of foie gras, which it did promptly. “Foie gras is officially off Postmates’ delivery menu,” PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman said, “and PETA will keep pushing other businesses to join it in rejecting this cruelly-produced dish.” Several countries have banned the production of foie gras in recent years, including Australia, the United Kingdom, and Germany. In California, a lengthy legal battle started when a law that banned foie gras in the state went into effect in 2012, prompting chefs to retaliate and succeed in overturning the ban in 2015. In 2017, three Ninth District panel judges reevaluated the ban and unanimously agreed to its reinstatement—a decision that is still under consideration by state legislators.
