On December 2, fast-food chain A&W will launch vegan chicken nuggets at its locations in Ontario and British Columbia. The chain is the first in Canada to offer plant-based nuggets, which were created in partnership with vegan meat brand Lightlife. The new menu item is available for a limited time, but if the trial proves successful, A&W will consider expanding the option across Canada. The nuggets are made with peas, wheat, and fava beans, and are cooked in vegetable oil (but not in a dedicated fryer). They are available in a pack of six or 10 nuggets as well as a kid’s meal option, and are served with a choice of dipping sauce (the chain’s Sweet & Sour and BBQ sauces are vegan). “We can’t resist our new Plant-Based Nuggets and we can’t wait for guests in Ontario and British Columbia to taste our delicious new nuggets for themselves,” Susan Senecal, President and CEO at A&W Canada, said. “Nuggets are fun to eat and fun to share and we think Canadians will be very impressed with our new plant-based nuggets for lunch, dinner, or any time in between.” In December, the chain’s Victoria, BC locations will also test oat-milk lattes. Last year, the chain created major buzz after it became the first to bring vegan Beyond Burger patties to Canada—and sold more than 90,000 burgers within the first three days. Earlier this year, A&W added a vegan breakfast sandwich featuring Beyond Meat’s Beyond Sausage to the menu at all 925 locations across the country.
