This week, United Kingdom-based grocery chain Tesco greatly expanded its vegan meat options. The chain now carries six products made by German brand LikeMeat: Nuggets, Kebab, Smoked Sausages, Chicken Bites, Chicken Curry, and Schnitzel. Meat-industry veteran Timo Recker founded LikeMeat in 2013 when he sought out to create vegan versions of his favorite foods. “You love the taste of well-seasoned kebab, succulent chicken fillets, or the taste of sausages? Cool! We feel exactly the same,” the company posted on social media. “The purely plant-based products by LikeMeat were developed by meat lovers—in order to guarantee you an authentic, hearty flavour, firm bite, and a proper helping of protein. Our planet is really important to us, and this is why our packaging is made using recycled plastic.” The new line—made with soy and pea protein—joins Tesco’s large variety of plant-based offerings, including those under the Wicked Kitchen brand created by its executive chef and Director of Plant-Based Innovation Derek Sarno. This week, Tesco will also expand the Wicked Kitchen line to include Jalapeño Griller Patties (burgers), Wicked Spiced Amazeballs (meatballs), and Wicked Chorizo Style Bangers (sausages).
