This week, acclaimed musician Lizzo revealed that she is now vegan to her 8.7 million followers on social media platform TikTok. “So being plant-based and vegan has been pretty easy except for when I am hungover, I used to crave cheesy eggs. So here is my substitute for cravings when you’re hungover,” Lizzo said, sharing a recipe for a vegan breakfast scramble. In the recipe, Lizzo scrambled together mung bean-based JUST Egg with vegan carne asada—which was left over from her Juneteenth celebration—that she topped with spinach and vegan pepper jack cheese and served with a side of plant-based bacon cooked crispy in maple syrup.

Over the weekend, Lizzo shared a feast that she had catered by Black chefs and Black-owned restaurants for her multi-day celebration of Juneteenth—an annual holiday celebrating June 19, 1865 when the last remaining slaves were declared free, two years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. Lizzo’s Juneteenth feast featured carne asada tacos and pasta dishes from Plate of Hue—a vegan catering company in Compton, CA owned by chef Stephan “Chefan” Houston. The next day, Lizzo feasted on chicken tenders, fries, saucy chicken sandwiches, and coleslaw from Lettuce Feast—a blog-turned-catering company in Los Angeles owned by Eva Cannon and Willie Perrymon. The musician kept the celebration going with mac and cheese, asparagus, corn, mashed potatoes, ribs, and beans from The Fat Vegan—a vegan pop-up created by chef Jakarri Hunt. On the final day, Lizzo admitted she was fairly inebriated and scarfed down vegan mozzarella sticks, sandwiches, and cauliflower wings at 2am created by chef Skyler Tanksley, owner of Orange County, CA-based Munchies Vegan Diner

In a 2017 interview, Lizzo revealed that she was previously vegetarian for seven years and vegan for one. Now, Lizzo has returned to veganism and since April, has been treating her fans to plant-based recipes such as her spicy vegan take on McDonald’s McChicken sandwich, Jamaican patties, and vegan ice cream bread made with Ben & Jerry’s new Netflix & Chilll’d non-dairy ice cream flavor.
