With Y2K fashion coming back in style, it’s only a matter of time before “The Rachel” is cool again and Jennifer Aniston—the Friends star who popularized the hairstyle—is here to help achieve the look the vegan way. Aniston recently launched LolaVie, a hair care line formulated without animal products and never tested on animals. “This project has been in the works for a long time and I’m so excited to finally be able to introduce it to you,” Aniston announced on social media. “So much hard work from our incredible team went into making this line—and we’re really proud to say it’s been made without all the bad stuff … we’re paraben-free, cruelty-free, because we love our animals.”
After five years in development, the first product in the LolaVie line is the Glossing Detangler ($25), a lightweight spray formulated to detangle, prime hair for styling, and deliver shine with the help of lemon extract, superfruit complex, vegetable ceramides, and chia seeds. All of the forthcoming LolaVie products—which will be released one at a time—are made to be a seamless integration of nature and the latest science in order to solve real hair care dilemmas without hurting animals or the environment.
Celebrity vegan hair care club
Aniston is the latest celebrity to found a vegan hair care brand to help fans achieve her famous locks. In 2019, actress Danielle Fishel—known for her role as Topanga Lawrence in the ‘90s sitcom Boy Meets World—released Be Free by Danielle Fishel, a vegan and cruelty-free hair care line. While Aniston is known for the shaggy “Rachel,” Fishel’s locks were popular for being long and lustrous. Inspired by her son Adler to develop the line without animal products or toxins, Fishel initially launched the brand with shampoo, conditioner, and scalp refresher and has since expanded to include additional products such as hair masks, leave-in conditioner, and hair-thickening cream so that Boy Meets World fans can attain Topanga’s big-hair look the vegan way.
In February, actress Priyanka Chopra Jonas—who is also known for her voluminous mane—also joined the vegan hair care club when she launched Anomaly exclusively at Target stores across the United States. Each product costs only $5.99 and the line consists of four shampoos (clarifying, hydrating, gentle, and dry); three conditioners (volumizing, smoothing, and shine); and a deep conditioning treatment mask, which all come packed in bottles made from plastic trash that was diverted from landfills or recyclable cans. Chopra Jonas spent a year and a half developing the affordable line in partnership with beauty brand incubator Maesa with the mission of democratizing sustainable beauty products.
Last month, television personality Jonathan Van Ness—the beauty guru in makeover series Queer Eye—put his own spin on vegan hair care with the launch of JVN Hair. Made in partnership with biotechnology company Amyris, the eponymously named JVN line features four categories of hair products designed to serve all genders and hair types: Nurture (made for dry hair); Undamage (made for overtreated hair); Embody (a body-building formula for fine hair); and Complete (for ready-to-style hair). Products in each category range from $18 to $28 each and include shampoos, conditioners, serums, and scalp oil—all the vegan products needed to create JVN’s bouncy mane.
