31 Dogs Seized in Alabama Dog-Fighting Ring Raid

The Humane Society of the United States recently teamed up with local Alabama animal-advocate organizations and law enforcement agencies to rescue 31 dogs from a suspected canine-fighting ring. The dogs were discovered living in an unsanitary environment without clean water or adequate shelter, and many of them had injuries that required urgent veterinary intervention. “We’re determined to put an end to the barbaric practice of dogfighting in our state,” says New Site Police Chief John McKelvey. “We couldn’t have saved these dogs without the help of the Humane Society of the United States and the Montgomery Humane Society.” Dogfighting remains a constant issue in the US—earlier this year the second largest dogfighting rescue occurred in which more than 400 dogs were taken into custody.
