Passengers flying from Los Angeles to New York now have a new plant-based option to enjoy thanks to American Airlines. Starting this month, the nation’s largest airline will serve a vegan egg scramble for brunch.
According to People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), the new dish comes with hash browns, dairy-free cheese, spinach, corn, and red peppers. The vegan egg, made by Just Egg, is a mung bean–based alternative that looks, cooks, and tastes like chicken eggs, especially when scrambled or made into an omelet.
“American Airlines is soaring above the competition with a savory vegan egg dish that’s kind to hens and appeals to conscientious travelers,” said the organization’s president, Tracy Reiman. “PETA urges other airlines to get on board by following American Airlines’ compassionate and business-savvy example.”
Last year, American Airlines also added vegan creamer to its in-flight menu after receiving nearly 150,000 emails from PETA supporters. At the time, Reiman said, “PETA applauds American Airlines for getting on board with vegan creamer.”
American Airlines usually offers vegan options on international flights. You can arrange these before you fly by going to the Special Meals section on its website and requesting either a vegan meal or a vegetarian Jain meal.
In the past, customers have received options like mashed potatoes with corn, smoked charred eggplant, and chocolate chip cookies.

Travel is getting more vegan-friendly
American Airlines isn’t the only carrier catering to plant-based travelers. Emirates, for instance, prides itself on offering vegan options in every class, with dishes such as curried vegetable puffs, chocolate mousse cake, Thai red curry, and crêpes.
“Emirates has always taken pride in our ‘Fly Better’ promise to exceed customer expectations and deliver an exceptional travel experience,” an Emirates spokesperson told VegNews last year. “The expansion of our vegan menu is just one example of how we demonstrate to our customers that we listen and are eager to accommodate their evolving needs.”

Delta Air Lines also offers vegan creamer on board. In fact, it was the first major airline to introduce the option back in 2023.
“We want every dining experience on a Delta flight to feel exciting for our first-time flyers, our million milers, and every customer in between,” said Kristen Manion Taylor, Senior Vice President of In-Flight Service at Delta. “Our customers and the diverse communities we serve are the heart of everything we do at Delta, especially as we continue to develop inclusive menus and bring new partners and products on board.”
