Belgium Approves Bill to Ban Animals in Circuses

Joining the ranks of the UK and Austria, Belgium recently set forth a bill that would make wild animals in circuses illegal. The bill was introduced by the Minister of Animal Welfare and ratified by Belgian Federal Ministers. In order to become law, the Members of the Belgium Parliament must approve the proposed statue. The move was made possible by the efforts of several animal-welfare organizations including Global Action to the Interest of Animals. “The government’s decision is the culmination of a 10-year long struggle conducted by GAIA for a Belgian ban on circuses with wild animals … it’s yet another victory in the fight for animals,” says GAIA’s director Anne De Greef.
