New York City-based chain Beyond Sushi will become the first vegan restaurant to be featured on reality series Shark Tank on October 21. Husband-and-wife team Guy and Tali Vaknin founded Beyond Sushi in 2012 and currently operate six locations across Manhattan, with plans for further expansion. “We’re hoping to give the vegan food movement a national spotlight with our appearance on Shark Tank,” Guy Vaknin told VegNews. “We want to show how creative and innovative vegan food can actually be.” Beyond Sushi’s menu features dumplings, noodle salads and soups, rice paper wraps, and vegan sushi rolls—made with black or four-grain rice and an array of vegetables and sauces. “As a chef, I aim to change the conversation about plant-based food which often relies too much on imitation products,” Guy Vaknin said. “With our diverse menu, we show the great flavors and textures we can produce from whole fruits and vegetables.” Other vegan Shark Tank alums include vegan apple-based honey company Bee Free Honee, dessert-hummus brand Delighted by Hummus, and DIY cinnamon roll chain Cinnaholic—which operates more than 20 locations in Canada and the United States with plans to open 136 additional franchise locations this year.
