Starting September 10, Burger King Brazil will introduce the plant-based Rebel Whopper to 58 test locations in São Paulo. The new option will feature a plant-based patty produced by Marfrig Global Foods SA—the world’s largest producer of animal-based hamburgers. “The brand will assess public acceptance, then evaluate product expansion,” a Burger King Brazil spokesperson said. Earlier this month, Marfrig announced it had partnered with United States-based grains and oils company Archer Daniels Midland Co. to produce plant-based meat for distribution in Brazil. In the US, Burger King launched the Impossible Whopper in more than 7,200 locations nationwide on August 8. Earlier this summer, the international chain also launched two plant-based options: Rebel Whopper and the Rebel Chicken King in Sweden, which it promoted in July with a “50/50 menu” marketing campaign that challenged customers to discern between the plant-based options and their animal-based counterparts.
