International food chain Chipotle Mexican Grill added plant-based protein option “sofritas” this week to all of its United Kingdom locations. The new menu item—the first vegan protein option to be offered by Chipotle UK—features slow-cooked tofu spiced with onions, garlic, cumin, oregano, and paprika, simmered together with chopped tomatoes. Customers can order the sofritas in burritos, tacos, bowls, and salads, or from the permanent menu as the The Vegan Boost. The eatery promoted its new vegan option on Instagram, stating that “you may question your meathood,” alongside a photo of The Vegan Boost. Stateside, Chipotle added sofritas (made with a similar recipe to the UK version) to its locations in San Francisco in 2013 before expanding the offering nationwide.
