Last weekend, CNN political analyst and human-rights activist Angela Rye gave the keynote commencement speech at Wiley College in Texas wherein she emphatically mentioned Atlanta vegan hot spot Slutty Vegan. Rye delivered the speech, which was inspired by late musician Nipsey Hustle, to the 204 students graduating from the university—a historically Black college founded in 1873—about focusing on long-term goals rather than “securing the bag,” or capitalizing on short-term opportunities. “My challenge to you is to secure the legacy because the bag comes and goes,” Rye said. “Today is a bridge into the rest of your lives. Securing your legacy is about being consistent over the long haul.” During her keynote speech, Rye revealed that she recently returned from supporting Slutty Vegan’s pop-up, an eatery she described as “an incredibly dope black-owned business.”

Entrepreneur Pinky Cole opened Slutty Vegan as a food truck last year and has since parlayed the business into a brick-and-mortar location, which consistently attracts celebrity guests, including Tyler Perry, Snoop Dogg, and Usher. Last month, Cole gathered a group of celebrities that included Lena Waithe, Janelle Monáe, Ludacris, Gabrielle Union, and Dwayne Wade to successfully raise funds to cover the funeral expenses of Nigel Shelby—a 15-year-old teen that died by suicide after being bullied for coming out as gay.
