Consumers Pressure Tyson to Ditch Gestation Crates

According to the Humane Society of the United States, the pressure on Tyson Foods to resort to more humane methods of raising factory farm pigs is starting to come not just from animal-welfare groups, but its own supporters. Triggered by rising consumer-awareness of how animals are treated, stockholders in the food company submitted a request that asked for Tyson to reveal the financial risks of using gestation crates. Canada recently banned the confining cages in its domestic farming practices while fast food companies, such as McDonald’s, Burger King, Costco, and Oscar Mayer, have stopped purchasing meat from suppliers that implement them.
