This week, we were excited to report that New York City’s horse-drawn carriage industry is coming to an end. Thanks to new legislation, rides are expected to cease entirely by June 2028. You can read more about the move and what it means for New York’s carriage horses here.

But, of course, we’ve also got plenty of food news. This week’s updates include new and returning vegan products, an exciting restaurant opening, and the sad closure of a New York favorite.

Not everyone loves a thick, doughy cookie. For some, it’s all about the thin, crispy kind. If you’re in that camp, you’ll be pleased to know that Sweet Loren’s latest sweet treat is, quite literally, Thin & Crispy Cookie Dough.

The new product, which contains 100 calories per serving, has been spotted at Whole Foods Market in two flavors: Double Chocolate and Chocolate Chunk. As always, it’s dairy-free and gluten-free.

America crowns its favorite new Oreo, and it’s vegan

Back in the summer, Oreo launched three new vegan-friendly flavors: Banana Pudding, Deep Fried, and Chicken & Waffles. But there was a catch: only one would stick around for the long haul.

“By dropping three incredibly distinct flavors at once, Banana Pudding, Deep Fried, and Chicken & Waffles, we are giving our community true agency to help decide the future of our product lineup,” Matt Foley, Oreo’s vice president, said at the time.

And it turns out the flavor America wanted to keep was, drumroll please, Banana Pudding. According to Oreo, the cookie features “layers of sweet banana and vanilla pudding in a deliciously delectable dual-layered creme, sandwiched between vanilla wafer cookies.” It even contains real puréed bananas.

Banana Pudding will return to the shelves in 2027.

Vegan on the FlyVegan on the Fly

Popular vegan halal New York restaurant to close after 6 years

Vegan halal restaurant Vegan on the Fly is closing its New York location. The popular spot, which opened in 2020, announced the news on Instagram, explaining that rising rent had made it impossible to continue.

“As difficult as this decision is, it’s time for us to close this chapter,” the post reads. “What we’ll miss most is you — the familiar faces, friendships, conversations, and memories we’ve made across our counter.”

The food truck will also stop operating, but Vegan on the Fly’s Tampa, FL location will remain open. And don’t worry, there is still time to enjoy one last meal at this Midtown favorite. Its doors won’t close for good until November 7.

“Come see us before November 7,” the post continues. “Bring a friend, and enjoy one last gyro, chopped cheese, mac ’n’ cheese, or your favorite Vegan on the Fly meal.”
