French Designer Unveils “Apeeling” Vegan Apple Leather Furniture Collection 

French designer Philippe Starck recently unveiled a 16-piece collection he designed for furniture company Cassina using Apple Ten Lork, an apple-based leather produced by Italian company Frumat. Starck used the material—made from waste products such as apple cores and skins—to upholster his furniture designs, which include sleek sofas and armchairs in vibrant orange, black, and white colors. The collection is currently on exhibit inside Cassina’s showroom in Paris, where the display is divided into three themes: doomed couple Adam and Eve, apple-inspired gravity theorist Sir Isaac Newton, and Belgian painter René Magritte (known for his apple-forward painting “The Son of the Man”). “Today, perhaps apples can give us the beginning of the answer,” Starck said. “Like Eve, Newton, and William Tell, we believe in the apple, in apple power. Let’s eat apples and hope that this Cassina sofa made from apples creates a new [vegan] path [toward] mutual respect.”
