GBK Adds Vegan Jackfruit Burger to Menu After Mocking Vegetarians

The tide is shifting at British chain Gourmet Burger Kitchen, which is now taking advantage of consumer demand for plant-based foods with its new “Jack-in-the-Bun” vegan burger.

British chain Gourmet Burger Kitchen (GBK) recently added an all-vegan burger to its 69 locations across the United Kingdom. The new “Jack-in-the-Bun” burger features a butternut squash and quinoa patty, topped with a vegan beet-spiked mayonnaise, Korean-spiced pulled jackfruit, pickled onions, and arugula, and served on a sourdough bun. “We are always looking to revamp our menu and keep our burger offerings exciting and fresh as we know that our customers like to try out new ingredients and taste experiences,” GBK head of marketing Jay James said. “While Jack-in-the-Bun was developed with our vegan burger-lovers in mind, we’re sure it will be popular among other customers who like to try out the latest food trends, too.” In January, GBK was forced to discontinue a portion of its advertising campaign due to offensive images and verbiage that poked fun at vegetarians, including slogans such as, “They eat grass so you don’t have to,” and, “We kill them so you don’t have to,” overlain on an image of a cow.
