Eatery and music venue The High Note Cafe in Boise, ID is going vegan thanks to animal-rights documentary Dominion, which graphically features the cruelty endured by farmed animals in Australia. After watching 15 minutes of the film, café owner Maria Bahruth decided she no longer wanted to support animal agriculture.
“I can no longer go forward knowing that I have supported great suffering and inexcusable practices by the meat/egg/dairy industry,” Bahruth announced on Facebook. “I’m terrified, but I know I’m doing the right thing, and the right thing isn’t always lucrative or safe.” Animal-lovers from across the world, from the Carolinas to Australia, have expressed their support for Bahruth’s decision. She momentarily closed the café so staff could be trained and Bahruth could develop a new vegan menu featuring tofu scrambles, sandwiches, and salads made with from-scratch vegan cheeses, seitan, sour cream, and condiments. The High Note is now open for business and is selling off the remainder of its animal products with no intent to purchase them again.
