JBS Dumps Supplier After Exposé Uncovers Gruesome Animal Abuse

Meat company JBS stopped shipments this week from one of its suppliers, Tosh Farms, after an undercover investigation conducted by animal-rights group Mercy For Animals (MFA) revealed rampant abuse at the Kentucky-based pig farm. MFA’s investigation revealed workers kicking and punching pigs, smashing piglets into the concrete ground, and mother pigs confined in tiny metal cages (known as gestation crates)—practices that JBS stated it does not condone. “Animal welfare is a priority for our company and our customers,” a JBS spokesperson told Newsweek. “We will ensure that all of our suppliers adhere to our high standards for animal care.” MFA’s President Matt Rice told VegNews that JBS suspending its relationship with Tosh Farms is no more than a public relations ploy. “If JBS truly cared about animal welfare, it would immediately ban the use of cruel gestation crates across its entire global pork supply chain,” Rice said. “As the largest meat company in the world, JBS has the power and ethical responsibility to end the worst factory farm abuses in its supply chain.”
