Director Kevin Smith—known for his films Chasing Amy, Clerks, and for portraying half of the comedic duo “Jay and Silent Bob”—thanked his vegan daughter, along with plant-based fast-food chain Veggie Grill, for helping him achieve a weight loss milestone. Smith suffered a “widowmaker” heart attack earlier this year and eschewed animal products from his diet in March. By the end of August, the once 259-pound director lost more than 50 pounds—a milestone set by his doctor to prevent further heart issues—and continues to improve his health on a plant-based diet. “The scale said 198 today! This is the first time since high school that I’ve weighed under 200 pounds,” Smith captioned an Instagram photo of himself on a hike. “Never imagined I could get here again but a heart attack can be a great motivator.” Smith has expressed his adoration for Veggie Grill several times since he adopted a plant-based diet and recently asked the chain to open a location in his hometown of Red Bank, NJ. Lucky for Smith, California-based Veggie Grill is currently undergoing a nationwide expansion with plans to open outposts along the East Coast in the coming months.
