The fried-chicken chain is testing Canadians’ desire for plant-based fried chicken—available as a sandwich or popcorn chicken—at one location in Ontario before considering a nationwide rollout in 2020.

On November 27, fast-food chain Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) will introduce Plant-Based Fried Chicken in Canada at one test restaurant in Mississauga, ON. The new option will feature chicken made by vegan meat brand Lightlife in two ways: Plant-Based Fried Chicken Sandwich and Popcorn Chicken (both of which are cooked in a separate fryer that is also used for French fries). The two options will be available for one day only, while supplies last. Feedback gathered during the one-restaurant, one-day test will determine KFC Canada’s plans to roll out the two options nationally in 2020. “We believe the Colonel’s famous finger lickin’ good taste should have no boundaries,” Sam Redman, chief marketing officer, KFC Canada, said. “So we’ve created several craveable plant-based options for Canadian’s looking for a meat-free meal.” The Plant-Based Fried Chicken Sandwich (available in regular or spicy) will be sold for $6.99 CAD or in a meal starting at $8.99 CAD, and the Plant-Based Fried Popcorn Chicken bucket will be available starting at $3.99 CAD. Customers can also try both options by selecting the $10.99 CAD meal deal for one, which includes French fries, salad, and a can of lime Bubly. Earlier this year, KFC trialled plant-based fried chicken made by vegan company Beyond Meat at one location in Atlanta, GA. The trial was so successful it sold out within five hours.
