Nutella began its life in Italy as a sweet hazelnut paste that contained only a small amount of cocoa, due to the post-World War II cocoa shortage. Over time, this humble paste evolved into various products, including a spread called SuperCrema and eventually, in 1961, the well-known Nutella.
For most of its history, Nutella has remained largely unchanged—and for good reason. The original recipe has always been a crowd favorite. In fact, according to Ferrero, the company that owns Nutella, a jar of the chocolate-hazelnut spread is sold every two seconds worldwide.
Recently, however, the brand decided to shake things up. For the first time in the US, it has introduced a new flavor: Nutella Peanut. If that sounds like your kind of treat, you’ll have to wait until the product officially launches in spring 2026 for a taste.
But, you can satisfy your cravings right now by making your own Nutella Peanut from scratch. Below, we’ve put together a few delicious vegan recipes inspired by Nutella’s newest product.
What is Nutella Peanut?
Nutella’s new flavor isn’t just extra nutty thanks to the addition of peanuts—it’s also vegan, as it’s made without milk powder. According to the brand, the flavor took years to develop and was created in response to Americans’ love of peanut butter. The goal was to meet that demand, but with a unique twist.
Ferrero
“We didn’t want it to be another peanut butter,” Seth Gonzalez, the senior director of marketing for Nutella, told Chicago Tribune. “There’s a reason why cocoa is still connected as a peanut-and-cocoa formula, instead of just peanuts. It’s more afternoon snacking than lunch, for example.”

4 Coconut Sugar Chocolate Peanut Butter
Nutella does contain a significant amount of refined sugar. When making a homemade version, you can substitute healthier alternatives like maple syrup or dates to reduce the refined sugar content and better control the sweetness. Another option is coconut sugar, as this tasty recipe from Gathered Nutrition demonstrates. “This recipe takes about 15 minutes in total to make, and leaves you with a jar of the most amazing creamy chocolate peanut butter,” says recipe developer Mia Swinehart. “I am completely obsessed.”
