Vegan burger concept Burger Patch in Sacramento, CA recently launched a new breakfast sandwich that drew a crowd of 500 people. The Breakfast Patch features a fluffy, house-made vegan egg patty, a grilled Lightlife Gimme Lean sausage patty, and melted Daiya cheese between a toasted English muffin. The sandwich is served with a Patch Brown—a traditional hash brown patty that is coated in a house blend of herbs and seasonings and fried until golden. “For us, the ‘egg’ has been our second plant-based Holy Grail right behind the burger,” Burger Patch founder Phillip Horn told VegNews. “We really wanted to create something that was unique to Burger Patch that fit well into our menu flavor profile. We worked for months and tested nearly 50 different iterations until we finally found the perfect consistency to recreate the nostalgic taste and texture for a traditional fast food breakfast sandwich.” Burger Patch hosted a one-day taste test of the new menu item and sold out of all 500 reserved tickets before the event—which resulted in a lineup that stretched around the block. “Our fans raved about the entire breakfast. Everyone had their favorites from the ‘egg’ by itself, to the entire Breakfast Patch sandwich to the seasoned Patch Browns,” Horn said. “We were overjoyed to see so many kind comments, including those from plant-based fans who said it was the first nostalgic breakfast sandwich they were able to have in years.” Horn said limited-time seasonal and new items such as the Breakfast Patch have always been a part of the plan for the grab-and-go eatery. Because the Breakfast Patch launch was so successful, Horn is finalizing plans to make it a regularly occurring item. For the fall, Horn also introduced a Sactown Patch Steak, which is a West Coast spin on the traditional cheesesteak featuring grilled and seasoned vegan steak chunks, house-made spicy melted cheddar, and grilled peppers and onions on a custom-made bread roll; and the Apple Pie Earthquake Shake, which features a vanilla bean shake layered with homemade apple pie filling and gluten-free, deep-fried pie crust crumble.
