This week, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) named New York the country’s most vegan-friendly city. To honor the meat-free mecca, actor Alan Cumming presented local politicians with a replica of the city skyline made from vegetables—including a radish-carved Chrysler Building. According to City Council member Corey Johnson, “New York boasts more than 140 vegetarian restaurants, countless veggie-friendly establishments, and the first vegetarian public school. The trend in green cuisine is healthful, draws food tourists, and employs thousands.” At the press conference, Council member Helen Rosenthal announced that she’ll be initiating a citywide resolution to adopt Meatless Mondays, a campaign that encourages the community to go vegetarian at least one day every week.
