International chain Pizza Hut has denied claims that it will debut vegan cheese in the United States this summer. Last week, The Vegan Herald first reported that it had exchanged emails with a spokesperson of Pizza Hut who was quoted saying, “We have been testing the marketing when it comes to vegan cheese for quite some time, and we’re just about ready to make the leap. We plan to have vegan cheese available at all of our US locations by the end of summer, most likely in August.” While the pizza chain added vegan cheese and menu options to its United Kingdom locations, it has confirmed with VegNews that it does not plan to do the same in the US. “While we’re proud of our dedicated vegan menu in the UK, the report is inaccurate and we have no plans at this time to carry vegan cheese at our US locations,” a Pizza Hut spokesperson said. The Vegan Herald told VegNews that the email exchange in question may have been the result of wrongdoing. “Unfortunately we believe we fell victim to a prank,” the outlet said. “We received an email from ‘Pizza Hut Media Relations’ which was signed off by ‘Michael Darvo, Pizza Hut Media Relations.’” The Vegan Herald later realized that the email came from an account that was not connected to Pizza Hut and is investigating the claim.
