Pork Company Caught Making False Statements Online

An HSUS undercover investigation shows that a food company’s claims of animal-friendly conduct may be misleading the public.

Seaboard Foods, the nation’s third-largest pork producer, touted its cruelty-free farming practices on its website, noting that it implemented “the most humane practices throughout the animal’s life,” but a 2011 investigation conducted by The Humane Society of the United States showed Seaboard employees hitting the animals, duct taping their legs to their bodies and poking them in the eyes, as well as confining pigs to gestation crates. After HSUS filed complaints with the Federal Trade Commission and Securities and Exchange Commission, Seaboard was forced to take down the animal-friendly claims. While HSUS sees this as a victory, it notes that it would rather see Seaboard change its treatment of animals.
