Portland Police Creates Panic by Claiming Vegan Milkshakes Contain Cement

One officer’s observation that a coconut milkshake looked like it could have contained quick-drying cement leads to mass spread of misinformation.

The Portland Police Bureau (PPB) posted an alarming, unsubstantiated tweet about vegan milkshakes tainted with cement during a counter-protest this weekend against the alt-right group Patriot Prayer and members of white supremacist group Proud Boys. Several groups were in attendance in downtown Portland, including left-leaning organization Popular Mobilization who gave out coconut milk-based milkshakes under a sign that read, “Free vegan milkshakes. No Nazis.” While most attendees drank their milkshakes, some threw them at members of Patriot Prayer and police officers. “Police have received information that some of the milkshakes thrown today during the demonstration contained quick-drying cement. We are encouraging anyone hit with a substance today to report it to police,” PPB tweeted.

According to local media outlet Portland Mercury, the tweet was based on one officer’s observation of the beverage with no further confirmation about the contents of the milkshakes. While many attendees reported that they consumed the milkshake with no adverse health effects, PPB’s tweet—which is still live—has been shared more than 14,000 times. “I drank three of those milkshakes and I feel fine,” one attendee tweeted. “Can we talk about the children in concentration camps now?”
