An alcohol-free queer café is expected to open in Edinburgh, Scotland in September. Founded by Oskar Hansen and Zak Riding, the new space aims to be a creative and welcoming space for the LGBTQ+ community, especially queer youth who are not permitted in social spaces such as nightclubs because of their age. Hansen and Riding have raised more than £6,167 ($7,800) through a GoFundMe campaign to transform the new space in the Fountainbridge area of the city.
“We had been talking for a while about how there is a lack of specifically queer-friendly, sober spaces in town for queer people to meet up and partake in a variety of activities,” the co-owners said on their GoFundMe page. “Then we saw on social media that the Greenwood was available for new management, and leaped on the opportunity. Once we saw the space, we fell in love with it and immediately saw the potential it had for our ideas. We want to turn it into an even more cozy and vibrant space upstairs for people to enjoy a warm drink, a smoothie, a pastry, or a delicious vegan meal.”
The café will also provide space for local queer artists to sell items as well as an art gallery and activities space for guided meditations, film screenings, tarot card readings, and book clubs.
