Several restaurants nationwide are reporting a shortage of Impossible Foods’ plant-based meat on the heels of its deal with Burger King—which will bring the Impossible Whopper to more than 7,000 locations by the end of 2019. Last month, Impossible Foods sent a memo to its distributors warning them of a temporary shortage, contacting many restaurants that serve the plant-based meat, as well, stating that it, “recognizes the inconvenience that this shortage is causing and sincerely apologizes to all customers, particularly those who have come to depend on the additional foot traffic and revenue that the Impossible Burger has generated.” Tim Sykes, managing partner of New York-based restaurant Ruby’s, did not heed Impossible Foods’ warning and almost ran out of the product last week, according to Eater NY. Sykes asked several local businesses if he could buy their stock but they, too, had run out. Last week, Sykes found a distributor that was able to help and bought “the last 11 cases [of the popular plant-based meat] in America.” Other restaurants, including vegan French café Delice & Sarrasin planned ahead by ordering extra cases to last until the end of the shortage. While Impossible Foods has the raw materials necessary to create its meat, the company is working to increase its production capacity to keep up with the overwhelming demand for Impossible Burgers. The shortage is predicted to last until mid-May, and Impossible Foods urges customers to call restaurants ahead of time to check for availability of its products.
