Rochester River School in Upstate New York recently announced plans to be the first vegan self-sustaining school in the country. Following vegan schools such as California-based MUSE, Rochester River School plans to grow, harvest, and cook all of the food served on campus and create a curriculum centered on humane education. Furthermore, the school will petition the United States Department of Agriculture to subsidize vegan school lunches—as the government organization does with meat and dairy—so that meals can be provided to students free of charge. The school plans to open as a kindergarten in the fall of 2017 and will continue adding grades every year until they can accommodate students through 12th grade.
