Netflix documentary Seaspiracy has inspired Hong Kong-based grocery store Slowood to phase out its remaining fish products. Produced by Kip Anderson—the documentary filmmaker behind Cowspiracy and What the Health—the film spotlights the damaging effects of the global fishing industry on the world’s oceans and exposes corruption, including faulty sustainable fish certifications and shrimp industry slave labor.

“Netflix’s new documentary Seaspiracy has opened our eyes to the overwhelming and damaging effects the fishing industry has on our whole ecosystem. I bet you will stop eating fish after watching this movie. Slowood will take a step forward and stop selling fish,” Slowood announced on social media. “At Slowood, we believe every tiny step counts and hope to join our community to make the world a better place. Stop crying over the planet, let’s take this step forward to ocean conservation together.” A portion of proceeds from the store’s remaining fish products will go to benefit vegan ocean conservation group Sea Shepherd.

While Slowood is not a vegan store, it offers a variety of plant-based products, including vegan milks, Daiya cheeses, dairy-free spreads, snacks, and pantry items, along with a large selection of eco-conscious home goods.

Seaspiracy hits number one on Netflix

Much like Cowspiracy and What the Health, Seaspiracy gained popularity worldwide almost instantly after its March 24 debut on Netflix. Currently, the film is in the top 10 spot on Netflix in more than 40 countries and holds the number one spot in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Hong Kong, Croatia, Estonia, Malta, Singapore, and Switzerland.

“We all want to say a huge huge thank you to everyone who is continuing to watch, re-watch, share, and talk about this film and the important issues it raises,” Ali Tabrizi, director and narrator of Seaspiracy, posted on Instagram. “It’s thanks to you all that this movement has well and truly started, and we have the needed overwhelming public support to take this issue to governments and industries worldwide to make huge systematic changes.”
