Starting today, Starbucks will add a vegetarian Impossible Breakfast Sandwich to the majority of its locations in the United States—representing the first time it has added plant-based meat to its US menu. The new sandwich features the plant-based Impossible Sausage patty, along with dairy-based cheese and animal-derived eggs. The sandwiches are not made-to-order meaning the animal products listed will have been in contact with the plant-based patty even if they are removed.

“Over the years, in response to customer interest, we have added plant-based milk alternatives such as soy, coconut, almond, and oat milk,” Michael Kobori, chief sustainability officer at Starbucks, said. “We are thrilled to expand our plant-based menu into food with this new breakfast sandwich.”

Additionally, the coffee chain will add its first vegan cold foam, made with almond milk, to its core menu allowing customers to add the new option to a variety of drinks. Starbucks is highlighting the vegan foam in two beverage options: Cold Brew with Cinnamon Almondmilk Foam and Cold Brew with Dark Cocoa Almondmilk Foam.

In January, Starbucks launched Oatly oat milk at more than 1,300 locations in the Midwest. Today, the chain is expanding the oat milk option to California locations. In addition to the almond foam beverages, customers in the Midwest and California can also order new beverage Cold Brew with Cinnamon Oatmilk Foam.

The new launches are part of Starbucks’ summer menu—and commitment to decrease its carbon footprint with plant-based offerings—which also includes a new vegan Iced Guava Passionfruit Drink that the chain added to participating locations nationwide in May.
