Starting September 12, Taco Bell will add a dedicated vegetarian menu board to its more than 7,000 restaurants in the United States. In April, the chain first tested its vegetarian menu board at locations in Dallas before expanding them nationwide. The menu—which highlights four of its current vegetarian options in one place, making it easier for customers to order meatless meals—is Taco Bell’s next step in exploring growing demand for plant-based foods. “At Taco Bell, we believe that vegetarian food shouldn’t be a compromise; it shouldn’t be limited to one item, and it shouldn’t be just for vegetarians,” Liz Matthews, Taco Bell Global Chief Food Innovation Officer, said. “For years, we’ve consistently proven that our vegetarian menu options are so craveable that even non-vegetarians unknowingly go veggie because they just love the taste. We’re committed to building on this insight and plan to further innovate in this growing space.” While Taco Bell will not be adding vegan meat options such as those made by Beyond Meat or Impossible Foods, the chain currently offers a customizable menu with 26 certified-vegan options. After launching its “How to Eat Vegan at Taco Bell” guide in 2016, the chain reformulated its rice to be vegan-friendly and debuted a line of vegan chips developed to mimic its hot sauce options.
