Traffic Lights in Berlin Urge Drivers to Go Vegan

Traffic lights in Berlin, Germany are encouraging drivers stop eating meat and go vegan. Unknown activists recently pasted “Stop Meat” stencils on red traffic lights and “Go Vegan” stencils on green traffic lights across Berlin-Mitte and Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg, among other intersections. Local police officers say the activists can’t be prosecuted for pasting them on the traffic lights because the stencils were easy to remove and they didn’t leave residue. Meat consumption and the environmental impact of its production are hot topics across the country. Earlier this month, German lawmakers proposed raising the value-added tax on meat to 19 percent to encourage the consumption of more plant-based products, a move that politicians believe will benefit Germany’s goal of reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by 31 percent by 2030.
