This week, pub chain JD Wetherspoon (known locally as “Wetherspoons”) will add its first vegan burger to the menu of all of its 880 locations across the United Kingdom after a six-month test period at 40 locations. The burger features a patty made by vegan brand The Meatless Farm and can be ordered “gourmet,” which adds arugula, salsa, and avocado as toppings. “We are keen to offer vegetarian and vegan pub-goers an excellent choice of meals to enjoy at Wetherspoon,” Jameson Robinson, JD Wetherspoon Head of Catering, said. “The plant-based burger is a great addition to the menu and we are confident that it will prove popular with vegetarians and vegans as well as those who eat meat.” In 2016, the chain added its first dedicated vegan menu which included Vegetable Samosas, Sweet Potato & Chickpea Curry, and British Bramble Apple Crumble. In addition to the new burger, Wetherspoons will expand its vegan breakfast options to include Heinz no-sugar added baked beans—which recently removed a honey-derived extract from its recipe to become fully vegan.
