UK Fish Disappear

Demand for fish decimates Britain’s oceanic ecosystems.

Despite the fact that the UK is surrounded on all sides by ocean, the nation imports half of the fish it consumes. Demand for fish vastly outpaces the oceans’ ability to restock around Britain, where the fisheries are empty just halfway through the year. Around Europe, there are a number of Fish Dependence Days, which signify the day of the year on which a given country’s supply of fish would have been exhausted had fish not been imported from other nations. And the effects of overfishing can be devastating throughout the oceanic ecosystem. While the European Union is at work on revising the Common Fisheries Policy, one easy solution to the problem would be to decrease fish consumption across Europe.
