Vegan shop Bonberi Bodega opened last week in the West Village neighborhood of New York City. The shop—a reconceptualized “bodega,” or iconic NYC corner store, that shares its space with a florist—sells curated plant-based goods such as coconut flour-based chips, banana bread, muffins, premium olive oils, superfood powders, smoothies, and a selection of beauty products. “As a native New Yorker, I cherish my local bodega for all of the essentials but wish they stocked products that were clean,” Berrie told Vogue. Bonberi also offers prepared foods including an almond butter and jelly sandwich called the “Elvis Jr.,” chickpea-based niçoise salad, hot cauliflower bisque, and a Dulce Caesar Salad. “This is my absolute favorite salad. It’s a throwback to those cold crispy ones you can get at a steakhouse, but completely vegan,” Berrie said. “We use dulse, an algae, instead of anchovies, which gives it that yummy ocean flavor and a brazil nut parmesan for crunch.” On the West Coast, famed vegan chef Matthew Kenney recently opened convenience store New Deli in Venice, CA, where shoppers can stock up on plant-based home goods, and salads and sandwiches prepared by sister eatery Make Out.
