Vegan Company Writes Letter to Presidential Hopefuls

In a recent video interview, Hampton Creek CEO Josh Tetrick told Fortune about an open letter he wrote to presidential candidates. In the letter, which was published in the New York Times, Tetrick urged presidential hopefuls to take a stance on food reform and remove subsidies from soy and corn—crops mostly used for feed in animal agriculture—and instead shift subsidies to healthier foods such as kale and carrots meant for human consumption. “For the candidate that gets it, whether it’s a republican or democrat, I think there’s an opportunity to build a leadership platform into a lot of good,” Tetrick said. Hampton Creek—the makers of eggless Just Mayo, Just Cookie Dough, and 43 newly released vegan products—has already made an impact on the food system by successfully standing up to threats from the US Food and Drug Administration, the American Egg Board, and Unilever, in addition to mass distributing their vegan products to both consumers and through food service.
