Okay, arguably it always is, but right now, the City of Light seems to be everywhere. The new season of Emily in Paris, for example, is set to hit Netflix later this year. And in the final season of the Amazon Prime hit The Summer I Turned Pretty, fans watched in awe as Belly and Conrad finally reunited in the City of Love. And soon, The White Lotus will bring its next chapter to France—so who knows, maybe we’ll see a murder in Paris next (though filming locations remain unconfirmed).

If you want to visit the world’s seemingly most talked-about city, there’s good news: despite its centuries-old culinary traditions of butter, cheese, cream, and meat, Paris offers divine vegan food at every meal. The city’s deep-rooted appreciation for organic, seasonal ingredients—combined with France’s growing embrace of plant-based dining—has inspired a new era of exceptional vegan cuisine, from dedicated vegan boulangeries to elegant fine-dining establishments.

Is Paris vegan-friendly?

The concept of vegetable-forward dishes is not entirely new in French cuisine. In fact, France has long been a revolutionary player in the world of plant-based food.

Renowned chef Alain Passard shocked the world in 2001 when he decided to remove meat from the menu at Arpége in Paris. Despite the bold move, Passard kept his Michelin star as a vegetarian restaurant. The forward-thinking chef emphasized fresh, local, and organic produce by buying land outside of Paris to grow his own vegetables. Passard eventually brought back fish and poultry to the menu, but in 2025, the famed chef decided to reverse this decision by pivoting the menu to be almost entirely plant-based.

“Everything I was able to do with the animal will remain a wonderful memory,” he told Reuters. “Today, I’m moving more towards a cuisine of emotion, a cuisine that I could describe as artistic. It’s closer to painting and sewing … Today I’m a different chef.”

Restaurant ONA by chef Claire Vallée also made history as the first vegan restaurant in France to earn a Michelin star in 2021. Located near Bordeaux, the restaurant, which closed as a result of the pandemic, was completely free of animal products, right down to its furnishing and decor.

In the same year, Michelin-starred Chef Alain Ducasse took a turn at a mostly plant-based concept. The visionary opened Sapid, located in Paris’ 10th arrondissement, with a strong focus on sustainability, reducing food waste, and utilizing natural ingredients at affordable prices. In 2022, Ducasse launched Burgal—a vegan burger pop-up that took over a kiosk in the city’s Place de la Bastille.

Both restaurants are closed now, but Ducasse has been incorporating vegetarian dishes in his restaurants since the ’90s, not only to appease the occasional plant-based customer but to align with his own environmental ethics. “We will be careful of the planet, [mindful] of its scarce resources, of the men and women who cultivate, who fish, who collect,” Ducasse told France Info

Paris is also home to a vegan fromagerie. Jay & Joy, which launched in 2016, combines plant-based innovation with the tradition of artisan cheesemaking. Jay & Joy cheeses are available in various shops throughout the country and at some vegan-friendly restaurants.
