Whole Foods Market Co-CEO John Mackey released Conscious Capitalism earlier this year, a book that asserts that ethical business practices and successful enterprise are not necessarily exclusive. Mackey’s business is following suit with his words of wisdom: in an effort to encourage consumer transparency and support organic agriculture, all products containing genetically modified organisms sold at US and Canadian Whole Foods locations will have labels indicating their GMO content by 2018. “We’re responding to our customers, who have consistently asked us for GMO labeling, and we are doing so by focusing on where we have control: in our own stores,” says Co-CEO Walter Robb. Whole Foods currently is the largest purveyor of GMO-free fare, with 3,300 products from 250 brands.
