On October 5, animal-welfare advocates joined forces with celebrities and political figures at the Humane Society of the United States’ To The Rescue! Gala, which raised more than $1 million for the animal-welfare organization. Hosted by Blue Bloods’ Will Estes, the evening was named for HSUS’ programs to rescue abused and endangered animals from natural disaster areas, hoarders, and mistreatment. Special guests included Today Show’s Matt Lauer; Newark, NJ Mayor Cory Booker; and celebrity chef Tal Ronnen, who designed the menu for the evening. HSUS also awarded Today Show’s Jill Rappaport with the first-ever Voice for the Animals award for her “Bow to Wow” animal-adoption TV segment and behind-the-scenes animal-rescue work.
