From now until May 5, vegan Green Planet ice cream is available at all 16 Van Leeuwen shops in Los Angeles and New York City. The flavor, released to commemorate Earth month, is made in collaboration with cafe and retail brand MatchaBar. The new flavor—a teaser of Van Leeuwen’s upcoming spring menu—is made with a base of raw cashew milk, coconut cream, raw organic coconut oil, pure cocoa butter, and organic cane sugar, accented with shade-grown matcha, and mixed with spirulina-spiked almond cake. “MatchaBar’s ceremonial-grade matcha green tea is phenomenal and it’s an excellent complement to our premium ice cream,” Ellie Zitsman, head of R&D at Van Leeuwen, said. “We understand that health and well-being are important to many of our guests, so it’s really special when we’re able to incorporate healthy trends that also happen to be delicious.” In 2013, Van Leeuwen’s added its first coconut-based vegan ice cream in two flavors (chocolate and vanilla). It has innovated its offerings to include an entire vegan menu with flavors such as Salted Caramel, Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, and Toasted Coconut Blondie. In addition to the Green Planet, the ice cream brand’s spring menu features new vegan flavor PB&J Bon Bon, made with dark chocolate peanut butter bon bons and raspberry jam.
