This week, vegan brand Beyond Meat announced that it is developing vegan bacon. In an interview with Bloomberg, Beyond Meat CEO Ethan Brown explained that the brand’s bacon is “improving as it goes through development” and did not disclose details about the ingredients nor the launch date. While its bacon is still in development, Beyond Meat is already talking to potential distributors. “We’re looking forward to trying their bacon whenever we can,” Emily Murphy, director of specialty procurement for food distributor Baldor Foods, said. “We understand from Beyond that it’s in the works.” In addition to its popular Beyond Burger and Beyond Sausage, the publicly traded vegan meat brand has diversified its offerings to include products in the breakfast category, such as Beyond Breakfast Sausage that, as of this week, is on the menu at select Dunkin’ locations in New York City. As Beyond Meat prepares to launch vegan bacon, its closest competitor, Impossible Foods, is developing plant-based fish to further its goal of replacing all food animals with plant-based alternatives by 2035.
