Today is officially “The Great American Takeout” day, a holiday created by a coalition of restaurants in an effort to keep their industry—which employs 15 million Americans—functioning during the nationwide COVID-19 crisis that has forced many to lay off employees due to widespread closures. The coalition, which includes vegan chain Veggie Grill, encourages Americans to order takeout or delivery today from their favorite eateries, and share their experience on social media with #TheGreatAmericanTakeout and ask others to do the same. “Now that take out and delivery is the only option to serve our guests and keep our dedicated team members employed, we created The Great American Takeout to remind our incredible Veggie Grill community we are open and want to serve you,” Veggie Grill Chief Marketing Officer Sarah Grover told VegNews.

Launched in 2006, Veggie Grill operates more than 30 locations on the West Coast, East Coast, and Chicago, and features a menu filled with vegan comfort food such as spicy Buffalo wings, hearty bowls, and entrée-sized salads. Aside from Veggie Grill, while none of the other 46 coalition restaurants are exclusively vegan, they do offer plant-based options, including Blaze Pizza (which now offers vegan chorizo, along with vegan cheese, sauce, and vegetable toppings); Qdoba Mexican Eats (which offers a Vegan Fajita Bowl made with plant-based Impossible Meat); and Panera Bread (which currently offers a vegan Ten Vegetable Soup and plans to transition its menu to be 50 percent plant-based in the coming years).

Many local vegan restaurants and businesses across the country are transitioning to a delivery or takeout model and can help feed you and your family during “The Great American Takeout” and beyond.
