Eco-conscious vegetarian fashion designer Stella McCartney recently featured numerous animal references in her Fall 2020 collection at Paris Fashion Week. The show included perforated vegan leather pieces, shaggy pile animal-free shearling coats, and eccentric gold and silver jewelry shaped like monkeys, crocodiles, and donkeys. During the final walk, models dressed in plush cow, rabbit, fox, and crocodile costumes walked the runway carrying vegan handbags from the collection—perhaps proofing that McCartney’s message extends beyond clothes. The fashion designer’s label has been leather- and fur-free since 2001, and has since focused on using sustainable materials. Last year, McCartney unveiled the world’s first eco-friendly faux fur made from plant-based ingredients. And in 2017, she partnered with Silicon Valley biotech company Bolt Threads—which creates yeast-based vegan silk—to replace insect-derived silk from her line.
