This week, Candian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that the government would make a $100 million investment into Merit Functional Foods, which creates ingredients for plant-based foods. The investment will go toward creating jobs at the company’s Winnipeg facility and support Canadian farmers growing crops such as yellow peas—which is the key protein ingredient used in plant-based meat products by brands such as Beyond Meat

“As people around the world start eating more plant-based products, we have an opportunity to bring together Canadian innovation and Canadian crops, and a chance to create good, well-paying jobs,” Trudeau said. “Standing up for hard-working farmers, creating good jobs, setting up Canada for success on the world stage—these are things that our government will always get behind.”
