Vegan scones were recently added to the menus of cafés operated by the National Trust—a conservation organization that maintains more than 350 historic houses, 160 gardens, 28 castles, and 60 pubs, along with natural habitats, across the United Kingdom. The Trust posted a recipe for its new “vegan cream tea” scones—complete with oat milk-based clotted cream and jam—before debuting the treat at its 350 cafés. “We are welcoming more people than ever before to the places we care for who have a variety of tastes and dietary needs, and our menu needs to reflect that,” Rebecca Janaway, development chef for the National Trust, said. “We know from talking with visitors who are vegan that they are looking for more choice and that they struggle to find classic British comfort food, and what could be more classic than the cream tea.” The National Trust also now offers several other vegan dishes at its cafés, including mixed bean chilli, red lentil cottage pie, and vegetable tagine.
