Batwoman Is Officially Vegan, On-Screen and Off

The fictional main character from upcoming series Batwoman will be vegan, according to the show’s executive producers Caroline Dries and Sarah Schechter. During a recent panel discussion about the show, Dries and Schechter revealed that many aspects of actress Ruby Rose will be translated to her Batwoman character Kate Kane, including her veganism. Batwoman will also be the first openly gay female superhero, a characteristic that also reflects the fact that Rose is a lesbian. “Representation is everything and diversity is our strength,” Schechter said. “We love this character and we love her sexuality and we love her beyond her sexuality … We’re really proud of being able to have an out lesbian woman front and center of these shows.” The recently screened pilot episode of Batwoman shows Kane being discharged from the military for her relationship with character Sophie Moore (played by Meagan Tandy)—a direct commentary on the “don’t ask, don’t tell” military policy. “When I thought about all of the people that were separated from their partners or were kicked out of the military, who had done these amazing things and fought for the country and risked their lives and then, over something as simple as who they loved, were separated or booted out, I immediately was, like, there’s a lot of weight on this scene,” Rose said. Batwoman is scheduled to premiere on network The CW on October 6.
